The formal organization structure of research innovation centers: a case-study in search of characteristics and an explanation

Research innovation centers are a hybrid of research groups and innovation centers and belong to the higher education (HE) sector. The Europe 2020 strategy promoted the concept of smart specialization as the future for regional development strategies in Europe. The aim was to improve governance practices within European countries on sub-national levels.
